Theophilus

Theophilus is an old word used in the Bible that means Lover of God.

Our desire is to see our communities come in contact with an intense understanding but an even more intense relationship with God and the love He brings through Jesus Christ.

Hey THEOPHILUS!

I have a question to ask you... when you hear the word, "CHRISTMAS" what comes to mind? Is it candy canes? White lights? Snow? Santa Claus? Presents? When you hear the word, "CHRISTMAS" do you ever think about Christ's second coming? The birth of Christ? Serving others that have need?

"Advent" is a word that many Christians use during the Christmas season to remind us of Christ who came to earth. "Advent" comes from the latin word "adventus" which means "coming" and "parousia" which is the greek word for adventus means "second coming." So as you can see, Christmas is not only about Christ coming to earth for the first time as a baby boy, but the second time when he comes back to reclaim his bride, the church: "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man." Matthew 24:36-37

In light of the Christmas season, we felt that as we remember Christ's birth (and his second coming) this year, what better way than to serve! Not only will you get to serve but you will have a FANTASTIC opportunity to earn scholarship money for "The Weekend."

How can you start you ask? DOWNLOAD this starter pack with all the necessary forms and paperwork to help you begin this process. The instructions are listed in the letter addressing the student. Feel free to be creative in how you go about finding service needs for others. Ask you local church, volunteer at a shelter, help a family that may need their dishes done.. BE CREATIVE! : ) As you initiate and follow through on being a living sacrifice for others, you will find that truly this season is a season of giving!

"God cannot give us a happiness and peace apart from Himself, because it is not there. There is no such thing." - C.S. Lewis

Oh how true this is, and yet, unfortunately for us we often don't live believing this to be true.  Instead we look for happiness and peace in other things: material possessions, fragile human relationships, financial security, status, and numbing agents of various kinds.  We look for satisfaction, acceptance and fulfillment in the many entrapments of this world that cannot ever truly meet our needs and desires, and we are left wanting.  Without happiness and without peace.

Oh God, please give us the ability to see that there is only One who can satisfy the deepest desires and longings of our lives: YOU!  Give us understanding Father of the reality that you gave us full access to Your glorious self and declared Your unfailing love for us when You sent the One who was crucified for our sake: JESUS!  Help us to see Father that there is only one thing that can change our hearts, mend our broken lives, satisfy our every desire, and grant us happiness and peace: DAILY EMBRACING THE ONE WHO WAS CRUCIFIED AND EXPERIENCING YOUR LOVE!

My heart's desire and prayer for "The Weekend" is that God would show us this year, as a whole community, the depths of His love for us as revealed in the person and work (both in life and death) of His Son, Jesus Christ.  I pray that we would know in truth and experience the richness and satisfaction that comes only through living in right relationship with Him, our Lord and Creator.  And I pray that in turn we would be compelled to truly be Theophilus - Lovers of God!

Much love,
Dominic Kan

Hello Youth Leaders. I'm hoping you came away from the Theophilus pre rally, if you were there, excited and pumped like I did. I was amazing to see the number of students there and the energy in the room. I love seeing them interact with each other. Such joy and excitement. That is just a taste of what the weekend is going to be like. Last year I was such a newbie. It was my first year and I didn't know what to expect. By Friday morning, I was hooked. I literally fell in love with the students over night. You know when you find yourself in a situation in which you feel fully alive and you don't feel awkward, strange, or geeky, you feel so natural and like you're doing what you are meant to be doing and you feel like you completely belong? That's the way I felt last year amongst the students and I felt that way again on Friday night at the Prerally. My heart beats with God's heart for them. Each one of their names is written on His hand. His hand is big enough for all their names and ours too, to be written on His hand. Such joy and delight comes to Him when He thinks of them and you as leaders.

I want to encourage each of you in the place you find yourselves with your youth. It's not by accident. It by perfect design that you are with the group of students you are at this exact moment. You may be experiencing some hard, dark, and difficult times being on the frontlines and in the trenches with these students. They are faced with many difficulties too from family, school. So many pressures and voices shouting at them and vying for their attention. They need you. We need you. God needs you. You are an expression of Jesus Christ to them. 'But Melissa, I'm not Jesus, how can I be Jesus to them with my own limitations, struggles, and failings, you may be saying to yourselves right now.' The truth is whether you believe it or not, you are Jesus to them. He is living His life through you. You show them love, faithfulness, compassion, obedience, etc. May the Lord by His Holy Spirit draw you deep into His embrace so you feel His heart beating for you. May you be encouaged by His love for you and that He is aware of all you and your families are going through.

So let's start in this place for prayer. Declaring how weak we are and how great is our God. Declaring we on are own can't be anything to our students but in Christ, we can be what God wants us to be for them. You are His hands, feet, and voice.  Let's also be praying for our students. Praying for eyes to see, ears to hear, hearts to respond to Jesus and His message of love for them. That His message of love, the message of the Gospel may become reality for them.

Please let me know how we, the prayer team, can be praying for you. Many blessings.

Hey Theophilus!!

This is Jen Mo. Just wanted to share a little about what God has been orchestrating for “The Weekend” in the arts division.

Right now, we’re working on a bunch of things: A Prayer Room (a place for you to sit and be with God, reflect on what He’s saying and doing, and to do some “art as prayer”).  A Prayer Journey (this year’s prayer journey will guided by God outside, in His Creation).  Our 4th annual Talent Night, and hopefully some other dance, art, and response stations for different seminars and worship times.

But in addition to all this, this year, I am extremely EXCITED to have the “Goodfoot” join us for The Weekend.  The Goodfoot is a performing arts company – started by a friend of mine – that has a heart to reach out to urban and at-risk youth, and to provide healing community for artists, musicians, dancers, etc. to gather and begin to share and express their hearts and story through the culture of hip hop and its various art forms.

They hold annual b-boy/b-girl battles, café tours, free dance classes to the community, even some missions opportunities… AND they will be doing an hour-long performance for us on Friday night of “The Weekend” as well as holding a seminar or two earlier in the day: teaching on the arts, the gospel, and maybe even a dance.  So get ready!!

For more information, check out their website: www.thegoodfoot.us

Or some of their videos at:

See you at the pre-rally!!
